Legend has it that the widow has the appearance of an old woman of around 60 years old, she is thin and small in stature; She wears a long black dress, common among widows in times past, and on her head she wears a green mantilla.

He usually appears especially near sacristies, on lonely streets and in the houses of the sick, announcing death; That is why when someone with a sick family member meets the widow inside the home, they begin to prepare everything to receive the bad news about the sick person, which is why they prepare everything necessary for the funeral in advance.

The widow also usually scares drunks at night; Sometimes she appears close to them and tempts them to follow her without ever revealing her face. The lustful drunk follows her without realizing that she is leading him towards the cemetery. When they finally reach the cemetery, the widow stops and reveals her face to him, leaving him witnessing an old and cadaverous face, with eyes full of fire and a toothless mouth that also breathes fire, drunks from fright often faint and remember the next day stuck inside empty tombs.

Despite being an old woman, it is said that she is very fast, and that her gait is like that of rodents.

What does the Widow look like?

The widow is described as an elderly woman of about 60 years old, of short stature and wearing a long black dress and a green mantilla on her head, her face is somewhat cadaverous and her mouth is toothless.

Origin of the Legend of the Widow

There is no certainty about the origin of the legend; In some places they usually say that it is the lost soul of a widow and hence its name, but the reality is that there is no certainty about the fact.

The widow is often confused with the “Green Lady” since they share similarities in their legends.

There is also another legend that is popular in Colombia regarding widows and it is the “legend of the Merry Widow”; which due to its characteristics is a different spectrum from the “widow”.

Where does the Widow appear?

He usually makes his appearances in sacristies, houses and alleys; especially in the Department of Nariño and Antioquia, its appearances have also been reported in other places in western Colombia.
