Step by step preparation

  • The first thing you should do is soak the porva corn for at least 24 hours, because this is dry corn.
  • Once this time has passed, remove them from the water, but not before cleaning them a little of any impurities you see, then proceed to grind them. If you don't have a grinder, you can grind them, put them through a processor or also use a powerful blender.
  • Then add water little by little and begin to knead until you achieve a smooth dough.
  • Then you must mix the dough with the butter and salt to taste, and knead very well.
  • When you have a well-integrated dough, proceed to form the arepas and take them one by one to the grill or preheated pan over low heat. Let them roast for around 5 to 7 minutes on each side, more or less.
  • Then you remove them from the grill and with the help of a knife you split them in two and add the curd cheese or fresh cheese previously cut into small slices between both halves.
  • Then put them back on the grill for about 10 minutes or so or until they are golden brown. Remember to turn them so they are well grilled on both sides.
  • And that's it, you can now enjoy these delicious arepas.

Interesting Facts

  • Porva corn can be easily found in any supermarket.
  • These arepas are very typical of Cundinamarca.
  • Traditionally they are usually prepared with cheese curds, but if you cannot access it, you can replace it with whatever you have on hand.
