Cartagena, a Destination of Interest for Chinese Investors
Due to its competitive advantages and investment potential, the petrochemical and plastics sector has become a major draw for Chinese business leaders.
Cartagena has emerged as a destination of interest for 30 Chinese investors. This development is the result of destination promotion campaigns led by ProColombia and Invest in Cartagena and Bolivar, in collaboration with the Colombian Ambassador to China, Luis Diego Monsalve. Given its competitive advantages and investment rationale, the petrochemical and plastics sector constitutes a primary attraction for these entrepreneurs.
China continues to focus on the country, recognizing Colombia as a strategic market offering competitive advantages, tax incentives, legal certainty, and investment guarantees. “Cartagena increasingly attracts investor interest, not only for tourism but because it is an industrial and business development hub for the Caribbean and for Colombia. Today, the city hosts operations from multinationals based in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and, of course, Asia. These companies find a strategic export and logistics platform in the region, in addition to the city’s contribution to development and high-skilled job creation,” stated Flavia Santoro, President of ProColombia.
The city’s petrochemical cluster is well-established and growing increasingly robust, featuring a group of coordinated anchor companies actively participating and working toward the territory’s competitive development.
“Cartagena is the leading producer and exporter of petrochemicals in Colombia and boasts the most modern refinery in the Americas. Coupled with its strategic geographic location, these are investment drivers that make it an attractive destination for entrepreneurs in the petrochemical and plastics sector,” noted María Camila Salas, Executive Director of Invest in Cartagena. Investment confidence remains steady in the territory; therefore, despite the COVID-19 emergency, destination promotion campaigns continue to strengthen and consolidate the city’s position in preparation for the economic recovery.
