BIOGRAPHY

Guillermo Wiedemann was a Colombian-German painter born on May 8, 1905 in Munich, Germany. He studied at the Akademie der Kunste München, where he had Hugo von Habermann and Adolf Schinnerer as teachers.

Between 1936 and 1938 he lived in Berlin, where he was a victim of the persecutions that Hitler began against modern artists, whose works he classified as “Degenerate Art.”

In 1939 he undertook a trip to South America. He settled in Buenaventura (Colombia) and then moved to Bogotá, the capital of the country.

Colombia became a great inspiration for his art, in many of his works the landscapes and inhabitants of some regions of Colombia are portrayed, especially a marked preference for Afro-Colombian themes.

His works are considered part of the expressionist movement. Furthermore, he is considered one of the precursors of abstract art in Colombia. In 1946 he obtained Colombian nationality.

He died on January 25, 1969 in Key Biscaine, United States due to a neurodegenerative disease.

  • 1963. Exhibition The 20th Century and Painting in Colombia with the oil painting “Intermedio”. This exhibition was held at the National Museum of Bogotá in honor of the delegates of the III Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Education.
