The Bojonawi Natural Reserve is a natural refuge located in Puerto Carreño, capital of Vichada; The exuberant display of fauna and flora that it has, as well as its diverse natural settings, make it one of the great natural conservation areas of the Orinoquia, as well as one of the greatest tourist attractions in the department.

History of the Bojonawi Nature Reserve

The Bojonawi Nature Reserve was established since 2004, by a group of lovers and protectors of the environment; is part of the El Tuparro Biosphere Reserve and has an area of 4,650 hectares. Its name (Bojonawi) is originally from the indigenous Sikuani language and translates as “water dog”; The purpose of this reserve is scientific research, the development of recreational activities around the environment and the protection of the diversity of fauna and flora that abounds in the place, especially its diversity of birds; In fact, in June 2015 it was declared an Important Area for the Conservation of Birds (AICAS) for being a refuge for at least 270 species. The reserve belongs to the Omacha Foundation, or “pink dolphin”, in the Ticuna language.

This Refuge is divided into three areas, the first is: “La Laguna El Pañuelo” a natural water reserve in the middle of rocky outcrops; This being the most important and extensive lentic system in the reserve, from that point you can access the Manatí viewpoint from which you can appreciate the immense beauty of this reserve.

The second area is the “Cerro Campana”, a tepuy or rock from the Precambrian era and the third area is the “Tepuy Morrocoy” named after the turtles that live in this place; The reserve has a wide variety of natural settings such as wetlands, forests, underground water bodies, savannas, rock outcrops, among others; as well as a great variety of animals such as deer, jaguars, pumas, howler monkeys, giant otters, alligators, ospreys and many more that make it a great natural spectacle; The scientific studies carried out in the reserve have made it possible to identify more than 1,400 species of fauna and flora as well as discover new species of animals and plants totally unknown to science, which makes it an area of special scientific study.

The Bojonawi Natural Refuge is part of one of the 5 provinces that make up the Guiana Shield, making it one of the oldest areas in the world; Bojonawi, despite being a small reserve in terms of land area, is very biodiverse in both flora and terrestrial, aquatic and aerial fauna; A great example of this is the variety of species totally new to science discovered in the place.
