The Gaviotas Experimental Center is an eco-village founded by Paolo Lugari in it Vichada Department in order to create a self-sufficient community that would be sustained with renewable energies, among its great achievements is the regeneration of a large part of the jungle in Vichada.

The Gaviotas center was founded in the 70s by the visionary Paolo Lugari, who brought together a group of diverse people, including engineers, artists, indigenous Kuahibos and orphans from the streets of Bogotá, to create a sustainable town capable of lasting. over time and achieve Paoli's vision of a self-sustaining world.

At the Gaviotas center, the creation of various innovative technologies has been achieved that has allowed not only their sustainability over time but also the commercialization of said technologies to improve the quality of life of many homes. Among these inventions, the “Heaters” stand out. Solar Water”, “Windmills”, “Sheet Pumps”, among other inventions and innovative forms of economic sustainability based on the use of the forests that the same community of seagulls has created without affecting the fauna in any of its processes. and flora that has emerged.

In its three decades, Gaviotas has planted more than 8 million trees and cultivated the largest planted forest in Colombia, causing a resurgence of the native forest and an emergence of local fauna, as well as an increase in precipitation (rain) in the place.

Over the years the project has received various awards and has been internationally recognized as one of the most successful environmental and self-sustainability projects, considered by the United Nations as a highly successful sustainable development model.

More than 200 people live in Gaviotas, among which there are about 50 resident families. Their socio-economic model allows them to provide a salary for the tasks performed, as well as housing, health care and food. There is no police, nor no weapons, no prisons and no mayors either, more than 30 children have been born in the town and about 500 children from the surrounding area have attended the seagull school, its inhabitants are known as seagulls.

What activities can be done at the Gaviotas center?

Eco-scientific and eco-tourist visits are made to the place through which you can learn about the entire process of constitution of the village, as well as the way of life of its inhabitants, the eco-sustainable technology that has allowed the maintenance of the project and conferences on self-sustainability and the environment; These tours must be arranged and planned by the site administrators.

Visits to this place usually begin with a conference by the founder of the project, followed by a tour of the forest and the planting of a tree by each of the visitors, then followed by a tour of the most important places in the town, showing all the technologies and processes that have allowed the success of this community, and usually ends with a conference on the topics of environment and sustainability.
