The Cerro de la Bandera is the best viewpoint of Puerto Carreño capital of Vichada, has a height of 97 meters and from it you can see the entire urban area of the municipality, as well as the mouth of the Meta and Bita rivers towards the Orinoco River.

History of Cerro de la Bandera

The Cerro de la Bandera is a rock formation known as Precambrian stone which is more than 350 million years old, being a sample of the Guayanés massif.

Previously it was an observation point that allowed the access of river vessels to be monitored and was known by the name of Picacho until in 1913, General Buenaventura Bustos, commissioner of Vichada, with the purpose of exercising sovereignty, placed the Colombian Flag on its top; Since then it has been called “El Cerro de la Bandera”.

Monument to Chief Samanare

If you make the climb from the Malecón you will be able to see in one of the rocky outcrops the monument to Cacique Samanare, which is a monument composed of three statues that represent the indigenous cultures originating from the region.
