Colombia Shines at the 2024 International Folk Art Market (IFAM)
With great pride, we share the extraordinary achievements of our Colombian artisans at the 20th edition of the International Folk Art Market (IFAM), held from July 11 to 14, 2024, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This prestigious event, internationally recognized for its commitment to local craftsmanship, environmental respect, and cultural traditions, served as an exceptional platform to showcase the talent and creativity of our country’s artisans.
In this edition, Colombia stood out with the participation of several prominent representatives who not only captivated attendees with their work but also contributed significantly to the market’s cultural and artistic diversity. Among them are:
- Antonila Ramos, a Tikuna Indigenous woman from Leticia (Amazonas), known for her iconic traditional Pelazón dolls, who was selected for the third consecutive year to participate in IFAM.
- Crucelina Chocho, a Wounaan Indigenous woman from Litoral de San Juan (Chocó), renowned for her vibrant Werregue palm baskets and bracelets. A participant since 2016, she was once again selected for this edition.
- Grupo Chipuelo Oriente, hailing from the municipality of Guamo (Tolima), made their debut with innovative black pottery pieces. Blending tradition and modernity, their work was enthusiastically received by visitors.
Additionally, Colombia was represented by other talented artists who also left a memorable mark on the event. These included Conchita Ospina with her Wayuu woven bags (mochilas) and hammocks (chinchorros), Reinel Mendoza with his Zenú weaving, Luis Pirazá with his copper-wire Werregue creations, and Marlén Pacheco with her jute rugs.
IFAM 2024 was a success not only in terms of attendance, drawing 18,500 visitors, but also economically, generating approximately $3.64 million in sales. For our artisans, this experience represented not only an invaluable commercial opportunity but also significant recognition of their work and a substantial boost to their income.
On behalf of Artesanías de Colombia, we extend our most sincere congratulations to all participants for their achievements and dedication, encouraging them to continue promoting and enriching the Colombian artisanal sector on an international level. Their talent and creativity remain a global testament to our country’s cultural and artistic wealth.
