History of the Church of San Pedro Claver

The Parish of San Pedro was built in the year 1580 by the jesuits in dedication to Saint Ignatius of Loyola for this reason in its beginnings it acquired the name of Saint Ignatius of Loyola Church, then acquires the name of Saint John of God ChurchAfter the evangelizing work carried out by Saint Peter Claver for the slaves brought from Africa, it acquired the name San Pedro Claver Church.

It has a colonial style architecture called “Jesuitic” of the type called “preaching”, a large part of the façade was made with stones from the Tierra Bomba Island and in 1921 the typical half-orange dome was removed and the current dome, the work of the French architect, was added. What stands out in this church is the existence of a second floor above the chapels, which are interconnected through semicircular arches and covered with groin vaults. It also has an organ and a choir, similar to those of the church of San Juan. Lateran in Rome, the organ it has is considered one of the oldest in Colombia.

On the main altar, which is made of marble imported from Italy by the Bishop Eugenio Biffi, the remains of Saint Peter rest in a gilded bronze and glass urn, a gift from Pope Leo XIII, the temple was declared a National Monument by decree 1,911 of November 2, 1995.
