The Sculpture to India Catalina is a tribute to Catalina, an indigenous woman who played a great role in the colonization of Spain to what today includes the territory of Colombia, she was the daughter of Chief Zamba, ruler of a tribe of the Caribbean ethnic group called Mokana, was kidnapped by the Spanish conquistador Diego de Nicuesa, sent to Santo Domingo and converted to Catholicism, served as a “peacemaker” and translator between the indigenous peoples and Spaniards, although in reality all her work as a “peacemaker” was used for the eradication of the indigenous peoples of the region, what is now called India Catalina is a living symbol that reminds the indigenous people of the Caribbean of the deception and betrayal they suffered from the conquerors.
