The San Pedro Claver Square is located in the historic center of Cartagena de Indias, Front of Church of San Pedro Claver, is one of the most emblematic and popular places in the stone corralito.

History of Plaza San Pedro Claver

The history of this square has been linked from its beginnings to the Church with which it shares the stage, the first name by which it was known was San Juan de Dios square, and later received the name Plaza San Ignacio de Loyola, which are names that the church had at their respective time, after the church took the name of San Pedro Claver, the square took the same name and became one of the many places that pay tribute to San Pedro Claver, recognized for his ecclesiastical work in favor of slaves brought from Africa.

Both this square and the church have been the main witnesses of the work of the man who called himself the “slave of the slaves”, this square in particular was a witness to the ecclesiastical teachings that Saint Peter carried out for the slaves in the afternoon hours.

Where is Plaza San Pedro Claver located?

San Pedro Square is located in the center of the walled city, bordering the Main Square and with him Museum of Modern Art.

This square forms, together with the Church, the Sanctuary to Saint Peter Claver; and with the sculpture of Saint Peter Claver a set of tributes to this important character of the city.
