Rafael Cerro Claims Gold for Colombia in Weightlifting at the South American Games in Santa Fe

Cartagenero weightlifter Rafael Cerro captured the gold medal in the +110 kg category during the South American Games held in Santa Fe, Argentina. The 29-year-old athlete logged a lift of 185 kilograms in the snatch and 230 kilograms in the clean and jerk, reaching a total of 415 kilograms to secure first place on the continental podium.

The competition demanded a high level of technical precision to overcome shoulder discomfort the athlete brought into the event. His execution on the platform allowed him to hit his projected mark in his first South American Games, a step designed to pursue official qualification for the discipline’s upcoming World Championship.

The champion’s athletic career began at age 15 when he transitioned from casual training to competitive lifting at his father’s suggestion. Outside of competition, he holds a biology degree from the University of Cartagena and graduated high school from Colegio Mixto de la Popa, shaping a well-rounded career that now adds this gold medal to a track record featuring National Games titles, Pan American and Central American championships, alongside a World Championship bronze medal.

This international result is the product of structured preparation alongside a coaching staff comprising Alfredo Obirnez, Oswaldo Pinilla, Oliver Ruiz, Daniel Gil, and Carlos Arrieta. The athlete plans to intensify his training routines to increase his weight loads and secure his spot at the World Championship, maintaining the national delegation’s presence among weightlifting’s elite.
