Chocolate Caliente: Colombian Hot Chocolate

Chocolate Caliente (Hot Chocolate) is a comforting and traditional beverage found in households across Colombia. While it is commonly enjoyed as a warm start to the day for breakfast, it is also frequently consumed during the late afternoons, particularly in regions with colder climates.

The secret to this quick 6-minute preparation relies on melting sweet drinking chocolate into hot milk or water, then vigorously beating it to achieve a signature frothy top before serving.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Whole milk or water
  • 70 grams Sweet drinking chocolate bars or tablets
  • Sugar to taste
  • Ground cinnamon to taste

Instructions

  • Heat the liquid: The first step is to place a pot on the stove and bring the milk (or water) to a simmer along with the ground cinnamon.
  • Melt the chocolate: Once the liquid is hot, add the sweet drinking chocolate. Stir continuously until the chocolate is completely melted and diluted into the liquid. At this point, add sugar to your liking.
  • Froth the mixture: To achieve the traditional foamy texture, beat the hot mixture vigorously using a wooden molinillo (traditional whisk) or carefully process it in a blender just before serving.
  • Serve: If you prefer your beverage extra hot, briefly return it to the heat for a moment. Serve immediately in mugs and enjoy!

Notes

  • Regional Customs: In colder cities like Bogotá, having hot chocolate in the afternoon is a common custom. They have a specific variation known as chocolate santafereño, which is recognized as part of the city’s intangible cultural heritage.
  • Water vs. Milk: While whole milk provides a richer and creamier texture, preparing this hot chocolate exclusively with water is a frequent alternative in many Colombian homes.
