Colombian Butterfly Guide: Download the World’s Largest Photographic Catalog of Butterflies for Free
Colombia is home to the highest number of butterfly species in the world, boasting over 3,950 identified species. Of these, 220 are endemic, meaning they can only be found within Colombian territory.
To promulgate, promote, and protect this natural wealth, the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Valle del Cauca (CVC) released a completely free guide featuring more than 13,200 photographs of butterflies living in the country. This launch, framed within the corporation’s 70th anniversary and the COP16 biodiversity summit, currently stands as the world’s largest photographic butterfly guide.
Figures of a Biological Powerhouse
The inventory consolidates scientific data that positions the nation as the undisputed leader in tropical fauna. The guide rigorously documents 3,950 butterfly species, covering all seven families present across Colombian geography.
Within this taxonomic record, over 220 endemic species stand out, as they are unique in the world and exclusive to domestic ecosystems. This volume of information makes the publication not just a photographic exhibition of Colombia’s beautiful biodiversity, but also a mandatory reference tool for the international scientific community, biotrade investors, and academics, offering an unprecedented visual database in the region.
Protecting Through Knowledge
This work represents a systematic effort to turn natural wealth into tangible heritage through documentation. Effective ecosystem conservation begins with an exact inventory of its inhabitants and the dissemination of this knowledge to the general public.
By making this resource freely available to both general and specialized audiences, access to science is democratized. This guide is not merely a tribute to the country’s natural aesthetics; it is a strategic instrument designed to safeguard Colombia’s environmental capital and foster a culture of biodiversity preservation.
