From a young age, she showed her talent for singing. With the support of her father Antonio Yará and her mother Marina Yanguma, at the age of 13 she represented her region in various amateur contests sponsored by radio stations. In 1972, she began musical studies at the Conservatory of Tolima, where she stood out among the singing students and was chosen as soloist of the Tolima Choir, which gave greater structure to her artistic and musical training. That same year, she won the contest Singer of the Year – Voz del Tolima.
In 1974, she triumphed in the National Contest La Nueva Estrella de las Canciones, organized by the television programmer Jorge Barón Televisión, which gave her the right to record her first album as a professional singer.
