Leonor González Mina

Biography

Leonor González Mina, better known as “La Negra Grande de Colombia”, is a Colombian singer, actress, dancer, politician, and composer, born in the Corregimiento de Robles, Jamundí, Valle del Cauca, on June 16, 1934.

Her career began at the age of 18, when she joined the ballet of Delia Zapata Olivella and Manuel Zapata Olivella. During a presentation in Paris, she was encouraged to sing to the audience, and from that moment she began a fruitful musical career. She has recorded more than 30 albums, even participating in the OTI Festival in 1975 with the song “Campesino de ciudad.”

Among her most memorable songs are “Mi Buenaventura”, “Yo me llamo Cumbia”, “La Mina”, “El alegre pescador”, “Chocoanita”, “Mi cafetal”, among many others.

She was married for 19 years to musician and composer Esteban Cabezas Rher, with whom she had two children: Juan Camilo and Candelario. In 2019, the production “Leonor” was released, based on her life, in which she also acted, playing the role of her grandmother.
