Lulada: Traditional Colombian Lulo Refreshment

Lulada is a spectacularly refreshing, iconic beverage native to the Valle del Cauca department in Colombia, particularly its capital, Cali. The star of the show is the lulo (also known internationally as naranjilla), a tangy, highly aromatic citrus-like fruit.

The absolute, non-negotiable secret to this lightning-fast 10-minute recipe is the texture. Unlike a standard fruit juice, a true lulada is never blended! The pulp is manually extracted and crushed by hand, then mixed into a sweet limeade base. This rustic technique ensures every sip is packed with a delightful, chunky fruit texture that defines the authentic caleño experience.

Ingredients

  • 12 Lulos Naranjillas, fully ripe
  • 2 cups Sugar Divided
  • 2 Liters Water
  • 6 Limes Juiced
  • Ice

Instructions

  • Wash the fruit: The very first step is to thoroughly wash the lulos and the limes.
  • Prepare the base: In a large pitcher, create a foundational limeade by mixing the 2 liters of water, the freshly squeezed juice of the 6 limes, and just 1 cup of the sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Extract and crush: Slice the lulos in half. Using a spoon, scoop all of the pulp out of the skins and place it into a separate bowl. Using your meticulously clean hands, vigorously crush and mash the pulp to break it apart. (Crucial: Do not put this in a blender!)
  • Mix and sweeten: Add the manually crushed lulo pulp directly into the pitcher with the limeade. Using a traditional wooden whisk (molinillo) or a large spoon, beat the mixture vigorously while gradually adding the remaining 1 cup of sugar (or until it reaches your desired sweetness).
  • Serve: Verify the sweetness level, add plenty of ice directly to the pitcher or individual glasses, and serve immediately!

Notes

  • The Distinction: Its main difference from traditional lulo juice and champús is the fact that it doesn’t require blending..
  • A Global Name: While strictly called lulo in Colombia, this tangy, orange-colored fruit is widely known as naranjilla (little orange) in other parts of Latin America like Ecuador and Panama.
  • Natural Diuretic: Lulo possesses natural diuretic properties, making it an excellent dietary ally for people looking to reduce water retention and support weight loss processes.
  • Stress and Sleep: In traditional Colombian medicine, the fruit is highly regarded for its calming properties, making it excellent for combating everyday stress and insomnia!
  • Vital Nutrients: This fruit is a fantastic source of Phosphorus, Vitamin A, and dietary fiber. Thanks to these components, it highly favors digestion and actively collaborates in the formation and strengthening of hair, nails, and bones.
