One of his most memorable roles was portraying Simón Bolívar in the series Revivamos Nuestra Historia. His performance was so convincing that many Colombians received him as if he were the Liberator himself. Rumors even spread that he had begun to believe he was Bolívar, though both he and his family denied this. His daughter later clarified that the rumor arose because, when drinking, he would recite lines from the character. While this role brought him great recognition, it also limited his career, as he became typecast and struggled to secure other roles.
In the 1990s, Montoya suffered a cerebral embolism, which he overcame with great effort, though his mobility was somewhat reduced. Toward the end of the decade, he returned to work, lending his voice to Caracol’s program La Lechuza.
On August 28, 2004, Pedro Montoya was found dead in the bathroom of his home. Authorities investigated whether it was an accident due to his reduced mobility or a suicide, ultimately concluding it was an accident.
