Breadfruit Arepas Recipe

Breadfruit Arepas are a delicious recipe that in Colombia is part of the island gastronomy of San Andrés and providencia and from the Pacific especially Choco, learn with this simple and quick recipe how to prepare them.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 pots or fruits of the breadfruit tree or 500 g of breadfruit seeds
  • ½ pound of grated cheese
  • 4 eggs smoothies
  • Salt to taste
  • Banana leaves or bijao

Step by step preparation
 

  • First you must wash the breadfruit fruits well and extract the seeds (depending on the variety used, the seed or the pulp is used, since there are breadfruits that have seeds and there are other varieties that do not have ).
  • Then they are cooked for 30 minutes in salted water.
  • Once they have cooled, the peel is removed from the fruits and they are ground.
  • The resulting mace is mixed with grated cheese, beaten eggs and salt to taste, kneaded well.
  • The arepas are assembled by first making balls and then flattening them until they are shaped like an arepa.
  • The arepas are wrapped in banana leaves previously greased with a little oil and placed on a grill to roast. You must turn them every so often and they will be ready when they acquire a golden brown color.

Interesting Facts

  • If you don't have banana or bijao leaves available, you can use aluminum foil.
  • In Colombia the Bread Tree is found in San Andrés and Providencia, some coastal areas and the Pacific.
  • The Breadfruit Tree is native to Oceania and came to America by sailors during colonization who sought to use it as part of the diet of slaves and workers on sugar cane plantations in the Antilles.
