Ingredients

  • 2 Green plantains plátanos verdes
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Prep the plantains: First, wash the green plantains thoroughly and carefully remove the tough, thick outer peel. Using a sharp knife, cut the peeled plantains into thin slices (like chips) and season them generously with salt to your liking.
  • Fry the slices: Place a pan with oil over the stove and let it get very hot. Once the oil is completely heated, carefully drop in the plantain slices. Fry them evenly, making sure to flip them so both sides become beautifully golden and crisp.
  • Drain and serve: Once they achieve that perfect golden brown color, remove them from the hot oil and drain any excess grease on paper towels. Serve them fresh and hot alongside suero costeño (coastal sour cream), traditional hogao, or your favorite dip!

Notes

  • The Savory Counterpart: Unlike their sweet, ripe counterparts (maduros), green plantains are incredibly starchy and firm, giving them a savory profile and a satisfying crunch very similar to a thick potato chip.
  • An Everyday Staple: These delicious chips are officially recognized as one of the most widely prepared and consumed everyday foods in the entire country, standing as a pillar of the Colombian diet.
